As the school year is dwindling down in just a few short weeks, camp is GEARING UP!! Beth and Nathan are working on term schedules, counselors are finishing up with classes around the Great United States and abroad, Diane is wrapping up orders for the camp store, Justin is ordering a few surprise water-front toys (EEEEEEEK!!! Yall are going to LOVE THEM!!), and I (Sara) am collecting all of the needed camper-forms. WE ARE SO BUSY! When most people are getting ready to relax and take some time off during the sweet Summer months, it’s Show-Time for us. We’ve been waiting all year for this!! Wooohoooo!!!
It reminds me of Bombardment – one of the all-time favorite tribe comps here at Vista. Each tribe lines up on their side of the gym, waiting for the whistle to blow. You’ve prepared mentally, you have a plan, your strategy is set…. and then WHISTLE!!!!! The other tribe is CHARGING towards the same line you are sprinting towards. It’s ON! Adrenaline takes over and you give it all you’ve got. It’s really one of the most exciting tribe comps because you’re dodging balls from all directions. Tribe brothers/sisters cheering you on from the sidelines is all you can hear other than the whistle blowing, telling you it’s full court. The last man/lady standing takes home the prize (or the tribe points). Aahhhhh… We can’t wait!
We have limited space in some of our terms for this summer. If you are interested in joining the Vista Family or know somebody who needs a little Vista Love, send them our way! We’d love to talk to them about making this summer one they’ll never forget!
It’s about that time of year when parents start to nail down the kids’ summer plans. They get the packing check-list started, shop for new swimsuits and shower shoes, get those twin-sized sheets down from the closet for the camp bunk-beds…. It’s a busy time. It’s really too bad parents don’t get a couple of weeks off before summer starts to actually PLAN their kids’ summers. One thing I’ve noticed over the last few years is that some parents are putting a LOT of planning and worry into sending their children mail and packages to camp. It is sometimes so planned out that mom shows up on Opening Day with 7 packages, each labeled with the specific day that little Johnny should receive the package. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to send a little something to your child to brighten their day…. it certainly does get them excited when they receive a package from home….. there IS something ironic about sending your child a gift every single day they are at camp. I mean… YOU SENT THEM TO CAMP!! That is a HUGE gift in itself! Camp is a gift. It’s not a cheap gift, either. Maybe if we talked about how much of a gift camp really is with our children, they would be more thankful for each day they are there. I’d love to take the stress out of all of your lives and say NO PACKAGES but I know that wouldn’t fly. We would like to encourage you, though, to keep them to a minimum. Maybe one package while your camper is here. We aren’t making this a rule – this year – but a suggestion.
It will take the stress out of YOUR lives, help us keep the cabins de-cluttered, and help your child focus on CAMP and the gift that it is instead of new toys or gadgets, candy stuffed in teddy bears, etc. from home that end up getting confiscated anyways.
<——- This is how we feel when the UPS man arrives at camp some days. 🙂 Imagine our joy/panic when we realize we have one hour before lunch and have to sort/label/deliver these packages before rest period. It’s a labor of LOVE!
Absence makes the heart grow fonder. If your child receives a letter from you every single day, does that give them any time at all to miss you? Of course we want you to write your child a letter. A hand written letter is something that can be cherished for years! I’ve got mail that my family and friends sent to me when I was a camper 20 years ago. Seriously, I could show you. They are precious to me and I can remember the feeling when my name would be called out to come get my mail. Such pride! But I also remember the days when my name wasn’t called. It was kinda sad. I’d sit back on my bunk and miss my family a little more those days. Wondered what they were up to. (Heart growing fonder, here.) It definitely made me more thankful for the times I did get a letter, instead of just expecting one every day. How about encouraging your camper to write letters to other bunk-mates or their siblings in the other camp? I don’t want you to hear that we are discouraging letter writing. I just see how many letters and packages some campers get and wonder if parents are ever trying to one-up the other parents or trying to spoil their child from afar when, really, the best thing gained/received at camp is…. MEMORIES and FRIENDSHIPS! Not stuff. The stuff = distraction from camp. And isn’t that one of the awesome purposes of sending your kids to camp? To get away from the distractions? That’s a whole ‘nother blog post, there, folks. 🙂
So, this summer, let’s all let our hearts grow fonder and our memories be clearer without distraction. DO send a package to your camper, but DON’T feel that you need to every other day. DO write hand-written letters to your babe, but DON’T worry if they don’t respond the same day. If you aren’t receiving mail from your kids, it’s usually a good sign. 🙂 Just ask my Momma!
We love you guys and gals and can’t wait to see you all this summer! If we can be of any help to you as we get closer to camp, call us.
Next Vista Bubble Blog Post…. The Camp Store Goodies! hehehehe.. just kidding!
Much Vista Love, Sara K
By the way – Our Camp Package Rules
Please do not send campers: candy, gum, food, money, water balloons, water guns, silly string, any shooting toys, etc. Any packages containing food or any of these items will be picked up and disposed of at the Director’s discretion. No items will be returned for any reason.
We hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break! It’s now only 85 Days until Opening Day at Vista Camps! Do any of you have a special camp countdown tradition? As a kid, I would always circle SV’s Opening Day on a calendar and then put a huge “X” on every day that passed. All those silly days that were in the way of VISTA drove me nuts!! I would dream of just going to to bed for the night and sleeping through the last 6-weeks of school to wake up to SUMMER. I know many of you campers are already counting down the days… and some of you have been counting them down since August! We love your enthusiasm and we LOVE your Vista Love! While it’s not a good idea to sleep through the last few months of the school year (we want you to enjoy EVERY moment of it…. and do your best), we do love a good CAMP COUNT DOWN!
As Summer gets closer, the excitement and anticipation gets pretty intense here! Think: dance parties in the Vista office, lots of screams and “whooohoooo’s”, celebratory cupcakes, lots of shenanigans…. We get REALLY excited as we get closer to summer. So, how do YOU countdown for camp? I’ve got a Camp Countdown Challenge for you! You’ll need to get a jar of M&M’s or Skittles or marbles… anything you can fit in the jar. You’ll need one M&M/Skittle/mini-marshmallow/gumball/Marble… for each day until your Opening Day. For example, if you are a First Term Camper, you’d need 85. Every day leading up to camp, you take one out and….. well…. EAT IT! Unless you use marbles. That would be bad. But don’t just pop it in your mouth and walk away. What if every day you took that M&M out, you also made a point to thank your parents/grandparents/whoever helps to get you here for the GIFT of CAMP (or some sweet gesture like that.) Maybe its making an effort to be kinder to your little sister or to tell a friend about your favorite camp activity at Vista Camps. It could be anything, but should be intentional. It’s all about sharing the VISTA LOVE! We do love you guys and cannot wait to see you this summer. We’d also LOVE to see what you come up with for this Vista Challenge! If you’re on Instagram, snap a picture of your jar and use hash-tag #vistacountdown. If you’re not on Insta, share your photo on facebook or e-mail it to me and I’ll add it to group. sarak [at] vistacamps [dot] com.
Much Vista Love to you and your family!
