Just a little proof from the Rumbo house that they actually did the Fantastic Friday activity! Yay Rumbos! Did anyone else do something fun with their family that they want to share? We love new ideas. We hope you all have a FABULOUS weekend and spend lots of ridiculously amazing quality times with your family.
In today’s world, our kids are in constant contact with technology. It’s everywhere! But, as we all know, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing (like the four brownies I ate yesterday). I find myself constantly nagging my children with, “Turn that thing off and go outside!” It seems, everything is plugged in these days including our children.
When James (Rio Vista Camp Director) and I travel to colleges to search out summer staff, we are constantly noticing the lack of social skills in our youth today. Our society seems to be producing young adults who have no idea what social graces are. They interact through text, tweet, Facebook and Instagram, never having to interact face to face or even over the phone. Additionally, their entertainment is a multi-million dollar industry that is overwhelming to the senses and takes little to no creativity on their part. So we are ending up with socially inept adults with very little creativity. Oh wait, I saw an app for creativity!….yes it’s Pinterest (awesome site by the way).
So what can we do as a family?
Now, I’m going to be completely honest with you…. if I could live outside, I would! This is precisely the reason I’m a camp director and is exactly the reason why I have a degree in Recreation Therapy and Psychology. I am also incredibly goofy and married an equally silly fella (Justin Rumbo). Together Justin and I are raising two comical little girls. We are faced everyday with the complications of raising children while balancing our spiritual life, marriage, finances, careers, school…etc (you know the list, you have one too!) Somewhere in the midst of all that chaos, our family life and having fun gets thrown to the wayside to accommodate the LIST! To an Outdoorsy Recreation Therapist and Camp Director, it kind-of feels like oppression. I’m clawing at the walls of my cage here (dramatic sigh). When we do get a free day? The absolute last thing I want to do is interact with my family through technology.
Our family has a little tradition we call, FANTASTIC FRIDAY (It’s more fun if you yell it)! Every Friday we do something as a family that’s both fun and interactive. No technology, just creative pure fun! My children look forward to this day all week. You know the old saying, “Kids spell love T-I-M-E, ” it’s true!
As a camp parent…. We are extending this tradition to you. Get out there and do something fun, be creative and get silly with your kiddos. Each week (starting next week bc we will all be enjoying our families over Thanksgiving away from the office) we will post a fun game or activity you can do as a family. If you have some good ideas share them (along with some incriminating pictures of course).

And we have a NAME!!! The new cabin has actually had a name for several weeks now, but we’ve been a tad bit busy. Camp started on June 9th and the new cabin is housing some of our office staff, the APD’s, the media directors, and our amazing nannies! We’d like to thank a very special Susan Bernstein Matthews for helping us come up with this great cabin name! We love you, Berstein!
Meet the Lookout!
Well, it sure is coming together nicely! We are so excited to house some of our amazing staff in the new cabin this summer. Our Media Director, Office Staff, Photographers, and some other lucky ladies are going to be the first “campers” in the new Vista Cabin. You know… there are only 89 days until camp starts!!! 🙂
Let me be the first to introduce you to our new CABIN!!
This sweet new cabin will have 4 separate bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, with front doors opening up to a shared covered porch. They will also share the common room in the middle, which will have a kitchen and living area. We are so excited about this project and cannot wait for the first tenants to be staying there.
The only problem is…. we CANNOT THINK OF A NAME FOR IT!! If you have any amazing ideas, please send them to us at sarak [at] vistacamps [dot] com or post them to our Facebook page. As soon as we decide on a name, we will let you know!
Meet Hamlet, the 2012 Vista Zoo pig. Our sweet First Term campers named him, fed him, and turned him into a big pet. I don’t think he has stopped eating since then. Here is evidence that he is being well taken care of. Enjoy and happy Wednesday!
